The world of work can be a baffling place to the average teenager - after all, what do those adults do all day in offices? - which is why our Year 11s gained so much from their three-day work placements this week.

The pupils, who worked within a wide range of sectors including pharmacies, grocery retailers, schools, libraries, law firms, GP’s surgeries, veterinary practices, libraries and defence and construction companies, were able to gain valuable work experience, knowledge and contacts from their time in their respective workplaces.

“It gives pupils an opportunity to gain experience within a business environment, learn new skills, gain confidence in their abilities, relate their learning to the workplace and help them make decisions about their future,” said research and development leader Karen Robinson, adding that it also helped pupils to be independent in travelling across London, learn how to better communicate with adults and work with others, to develop a deeper understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, as well as in identifying their employability and key skills.

Ms Robinson also expressed her gratitude to the large number of parents who offered placements, and especially those who stepped in at the last minute when a couple of the positions fell through.
