Qualifier - 11/05/2016

By Mr Brooks

Bolingbroke Academy set off on Wednesday 11th of May to compete in the London School Games qualifier.  With places in the Wandsworth Regional team at stake, pupils were excited from the start.  35 athletes competed, one of the largest contingents at the competition.  The start of the day wasn’t your typical Athletics weather with dark clouds and light showers.  Nevertheless, the pupils were out on the track warming up and were raring to go by the time the competition began.

Round 1: This round saw Karim Harrak, Kai Providence and Michelt Traore competing in the 70m hurdles.  Each placed in the top 3 in their heats.  Soon after this, Sunny Balogun and Yandi Shyngle competed in the longest race of the day against some tough opposition and placed in the final.  In the field Michelt Traore was using her height to good effect in the High Jump, Yassir Hassan was competing for a podium place in the javelin whilst Oghale Erikigho was battling for the gold medal in the shotput.

Round 2: This round had the most anticipated and eagerly awaited event for spectator and competitors alike—the 100m sprint.  In the year 7 races Michael Adomako, Michael Poku, Rachel Agege and Etta Sam were all outstanding with Michael Poku  claiming second place in his heat to later qualify for the finals.  In year 8 Dontay Burke-Wallace and Tyrone Beia competed well in an incredibly tough field coming 4th and 3rd respectively.   Etta Sam placed second in her heat but exceptional performances across heats by girls from other schools meant she missed out on a place in the final by seconds.  Rachel Agege recovered from an unfortunate slip in the starting blocks to finish 4th but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to claim a place in the final. In the 200m sprint Poppy Ward and Anita Ideh represented the girls with distinction whilst Raphael Watson-Whyte claimed 3rd place in his head .  Track performance of the day came from Amir Sultan-Edwards who finished 1st, 35m ahead of the next closest competitor.

Whilst Bolingbroke were placing well in the track events, Milly Dakin and Yandi Shyngle were competing in the high jump and ended up being 2 of the last four competitors left.  Milly faced some taller opposition but held her own to claim a bronze medal. This was an exceptional performance from Yandi who had limited experience of doing high jump.  Jack Dakin placed 3rd in the Javelin being beaten by two exceptional throws.

Finals: Next up were the finals where we had a number of competitors.  Michael Poku qualified for the 100m final, Amir Sultan-Edwards for the 200m and Etta Sam for the 100m.  Michael came 3rd in his race by inches to claim bronze, Amir finished comfortably in 1st place to claim gold and Etta Sam was the victim of a 50/50 decision to be denied 3rd place in her race.  The school relay teams were consistently exceptional with all teams placing the top 3 and claiming the silver medal over all.

A fantastic day and congratulations to all those athletes who claimed medals.  More to follow as the best athletes of the day will represent team Wandsworth!
