Concert by Candlelight 2017

Concert by Candlelight, St Barnabus' Church

On 12 December, pupils, staff and parents gathered at St Barnabus’ Church on Clapham Common for Bolingbroke Academy’s Concert by Candlelight.  A new location for this year’s concert, the church, beautifully lit by candles, along with the pre-concert performances from the Bolingbroke Brass Ensemble provided a festive and warming setting.

The audience sang with great enthusiasm to well known carols, including a special new verse written by Florence Scott – Winner of the House Christmas Carol competition. Singing was accompanied by the superb Bolingbroke Senior Band, followed by the Bolingbroke Brass Ensemble who went on to play Holst’s Mars from The Planets which was incredibly moving.

Readings were read beautifully by Mabel Shepherd and Hugo Scott, followed by pieces from the Senior Choir, boys choir, Rock School and Bolingbroke Belles. Ahead of the interval was the turn of the Staff Choir who gave a fantastic rendition of Fairytale of New York by The Pogues. The range of musical performances was nothing less than incredible, a testament to the inspiring talent of our pupils and as one parent commented “such a wonderful evening a true festive musical extravaganza!“

After an interval of scrumptious mince pies and festive refreshments, the Year 10 GCSE Music Ensemble accompanied more carol singing, going on to play Merry Christmas Everyone by Shakin Stevens which made sure everybody’s feet were tapping along!

Betty Smith, Alliyah Johnson and Megan Rowland and the Show Band wowed us with their performance from Beauty & the Beast as did the Year 12 Music Ensemble playing Dave Brubeck’s take Five, and lastly Chris Hayden, Jamaine Scarlett and Owen Prenelle who performed Fly me to the Moon by Frank Sinatra.

All in all, as wonderfully summed up by parents and teachers alike “Today's Christmas performance was incredible!, every aspect of it. We have been to quite a few and it is no comparison...” and also “Just wanted to say a massive well done for Tuesday night. You and the team put on a fantastic concert. It was great to see such a variety of kids on stage performing, and many kids in a different light!”

The Senior Band and Senior Choir joined forces to play White Christmas by Irving Berlin before the audience were upstanding and sang their hearts out to We Wish you a Merry Christmas!

To that end, we do wish you all a very Merry Christmas and thank you for joining us for such a wonderful, festive and inspirational Concert by Candlelight.
