German Foreign Exchange
Year 8, 9 & 10 German Foreign Exchange
On Monday 20 February, 19 German students from Philipp Melanchthon Gymnasium (PMG) in Meine, Germany arrived to spend a week with students from Bolingbroke Academy.
Located in Meine – Central North Germany, near Hanover, PMG is our preferred exchange school, the annual trip gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a different culture, practice a different language and experience a school day alongside their English host.
Led by Ms Sherman and accompanied by Ms Griesing and Ms Christmann, the German students saw some of the sights of London – The London Eye, Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. As Anna-Lena commented “I’ve never visited London before, there is so much to see and it is so big!” The group have also sampled the delights of the city with Marius confirming “You have the best Fish & Chips.”
Each day, the German students accompanied their English host to every lesson, this was a fantastic insight for both groups of students to share how they learn and discuss the topics covered. Ruth M’be and Vassilios Logizidis explained “The exchange is a really good for improving communication and language skills as you don’t always know the exact word. It is a great way to make new friends and experience living in a different city.”
PMG is based in Meine which is in a more rural location than Bolingbroke Academy so it has been a very different school day for the students, as Maxime noted “The school is great, it is so big but I have met lots of new people and I am looking forward to showing our English hosts our school”.
All pupils on the exchange will complete a project entitled ‘Our Schools’ which aims at collecting information about the school traditions and daily routines of the partner school and comparing it to your own.
When the Bolingbroke pupils visit the PMG in March, they will put together a presentation, which will then be used to provide information about the trip to the other pupils in the school.
After school the students all partook in various activities, including a scrumptious Raclette evening, a bowling tournament, pizza and movie night, as well as further sightseeing, kindly organised by Mrs Mikayo Langhofer.
The German host teachers Ms Griesing and Ms Christmann have also had a very enjoyable trip and joined the Parent Association quiz night to test their knowledge!
The weekend was packed full of more sightseeing to the Tower of London, Greenwich and Hampton Court and rounded off with a ‘Karneval’ on Monday – a celebration whereby the students dress up and sing traditional carnival songs.
The English students will travel 600 miles over to Meine in late March where they will be hosted by German families and have the opportunity to experience going to school at PMG.
Thank you to the staff for organising the trip, the host families and to all the students involved; a very successful and enjoyable exchange trip.
