Musical scholars' rock the room with top quality show

Bolingbroke's Musical Scholars concert

Bolingbroke Academy was rocked to the rafters last week with the sounds of our brilliant musical scholars working their way through a diverse musical repertoire, from Beatles and Steely Dan hits and West End musical’s biggest crowd pleasers to the classical overtures of Brahms, Haydn and Chopin.

Kicking off the evening was an energetic performance of Thin Lizzy’s The Boys are Back in Town by sixth form band Verge of Frenzy, whose members include Chris on guitar, Lukas on bass, Jackson on guitar, Marti  vocalist and Mikey on drums.

Megan and Betty gave a haunting rendition of For Good from Wicked, while Eugenie and Moniece sung The Man that Got Away.

A barnstoming version of Queen’s Somebody to Love was followed by Shannon  on clarinet playing Bach’s Badinerie, while other performances included Charlie on trombone playing Allegro by Rochut, Zoe on clarinet playing the Wizard by Duncan Lamong, and Nyashia singing a Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square.

The evening wrapped up with a fantastic performance of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, involving all of the performers.

Richard Wilson, parents of year 13 twins James & Mikey described it as a “brilliant evening” adding that he was particularly impressed by the ambitious pieces of music they played.

Another Bolingbroke parent Stan Faure, whose daughter Eugenie and son Louis are both musical scholars, has attended almost every concert since 2012  and said it was marked how the fledgling musicians continue to improve. “It was a fantastic performance last night,” he said, adding that a highlight was the blend of classical music and pop.

Bolingbroke’s music scholars and apprentices are selected via an audition and interview process, and those who are chosen are recognised as having a particular musical talent. Auditions are held every July to join the prestigious programme, with pupils performing two contrasting pieces, as well as having an interview with head of music Ms Breckon and other members of the music team.

Music apprentices are also able to audition to become scholars at the same time. If you’re interested in joining this select band, keep your eyes open for the sign up details, which will be displayed in the music department in June.
