Our approach

Design and technology permeate every aspect of our daily lives.

At Bolingbroke Academy, we aim for pupils to be inspired to look deeper into how and why products have evolved, building an awareness on how design and technology influence the way we see and use the environment we live in.

Design and technology connect multiple subjects from STEM learning programmes of study; Science, Technology (Computer Science), Engineering (with science) and Maths through to the Creative Performing Arts, Geography and Sports. Design and technology are therefore taught across multiple subjects, including our personal development programme, recognising the multiple influencing factors such as design, creation, nutrition and technical knowledge.

Our STEM & Arts curriculum supports our four values in the following ways:

Courageous
We want to ensure our young people learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising, and capable individuals. Pupils are given the freedom within their Art & Design projects to interpret, make, exhibit and discuss their ideas and creations, particularly in their Year 8 Pop Events and Year 9 Life Events projects.

Compassionate
As part of our diverse Creative and Performing Arts curriculums, pupils are offered opportunities to discuss and develop a greater understanding of individual, social, political and world issues that impact the world of design and technology through the exploration of different artists, their backgrounds and musical genres.

Community
Pupils are provided with opportunities and projects that help solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. For example, across their Key stage 3 pupils will engage in a wide range of activities from the Year 7 Invention convention, Safer Internet Day and Personal Development project in civitas. Our Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award also offers pupils an excellent opportunity to build upon their nutritional understanding and skills.

Empowering Excellence
At Bolingbroke, we believe in building a deeper understanding of subjects through considering cross- curricular links to the world of design and technology. We empower our pupils to see how these fields are practically seen and used, specifically in the learning of technological knowledge in Science, Geography and Computer Science, identifying how specific designs and technologies make essential contributions to our creativity, culture, productivity and well-being.
